Wedding Magazine Cover

Times of the Island magazine cover-Nick Adams Photography
Wedding Magazine Cover

I was delighted to find out that I was chosen for the Times of The Islands Wedding magazine cover.

Picky and Sarah were the Bride and Groom. They got married at the beautiful Casa Ybel Resort located here on Sanibel Island.

When I asked Pikey how they met and she shared: “We both work in the car business, Pikey’s family owns a dealership and my family owns a car auction. He had been coming to the auction for many years. He says I always looked at him, but in reality it was always him looking over at me, and he is such a wuss one time a co-worker of his asked me for my number for Pikey. I gave it to him and he called me and the rest is history.” A great and unique story. I also asked Sarah to share her wedding plans and what she thought would make their event unique, this is what she said, “We love Sanibel Island, so we wanted to be on the grass but right beside the water. We wanted the island theme for our close family and friends, it was beautiful, classy, but most of all fun.”  she added: Steve played beautiful music, (referring to Steve Farst, a phenomenal local musician) the food was delicious. Everyone there was beautiful.

I could not have done it without Sarah and Pikey. A terrific couple. Sarah had put a lot of planning into this wedding (along with the amazing, Tori Weatherford, of Casa Ybel Resort) and it showed.  They chose to have their ceremony on the Lawn, followed by a tented reception located right next to the ceremony site.

Casa Ybel Resort is one of the few places on the Islands that can accommodate a tented venue at a beach wedding. If you can time it right, with the weather, there is no better way to have a reception. Fall and spring are typically the best times, the temperature is normally in the 70’s with low humidity. The lawn area at Casa Ybel is made up of Bermuda grass, which is normally reserved for golf courses here in Florida. Not a big deal you think? Well… it kinda is. It takes a lot more effort to look after than the usual St Augustine variety. Bermuda grass is so soft, it is really fine, it feels great on your feet. St Augustine looks very nice but it has huge blades and is more like a thick mat of grass, not as soft. And as they say: ‘it’s all in the details’

You can see in the picture below that Sarah and Pikey opted to have the sides of the tent rolled up which is a great idea as it lets the breeze flow through. This particular tent is really well designed (this one is owned by the resort). Should the wind pick up or the temperature suddenly drop the sides of the tent can be dropped to the ground in a matter of minutes.

I digress!

Jillian & Michael – The Sanctuary Golf Club, Sanibel

Sanctuary Golf Club Wedding

A Sanctuary Golf Club Wedding is always a fantastic wedding. The Sanctuary is located off the north end of the SanCap Road on the way to Captiva at around mile marker six. It’s a beautiful location. The lavish homes and clubhouse are set amongst a wildlife Sanctuary.  On your way into The Sanctuary you will notice the exit of the adjacent  J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife refuge. The clubhouse is modern but has a deeply rooted, Colonial feel to it. The views across the perfectly manicured golf course are stunning. This private golf club with a small membership of around 250, has one of the best interiors on the Islands. From the oak lockers adorning brass plaques of the fortunate few that are lucky enough to call themselves members, to the stone fireplace in the main dinning hall. The architechture is both stunning and tastefully done. If you are looking for a larger venue with nice high ceilings this is the place for you. Big bands? this is the place. I actually recomended this venue to my wife’s cousin, Samantha and she consequential got married there. They absolutely loved it.  A Sanctuary Golf Club wedding will also ensure your privacy. You can rest assured that your wedding will be the ONLY wedding that day and there are not many venues on the Islands that can say that. The beaches are only a 5-7 minute drive away so you can totally schedule a sunset photography session at the beach after your ceremony if you wish to do so.

About the Wedding

Jillian knew Michael was the man she wanted to marry from the moment they meant. Jillian has been coming to Sanibel since she was 3 years old and absolutely loves it! When she got engaged she knew Sanibel is where she wanted to get married as a way to make the island even more special to Michael and herself. Jillian wanted to offer the opportunity for people who are close to them to share this special place too! She was so excited for everyone to enjoy Sanibel as much as she does.  She pictured her wedding day to be a lot of fun, and that it was.

Floral Artistry did an amazing job with the flowers and Kevin Schell kept everyone hopping with his musical prowess!  Food and Beverage Director, Tim Gaccione did a phenomenal job keeping everyone on track at this Sanctuary Golf Club wedding. It turned out to be a fantastic day. Jillian and Micheal had a blast and it was an honor to be a part of it!

Family Portraits and Bad Weather, Sanibel Lighthouse Beach

Sanibel Photography

Sanibel photography is always fun but when you have a run of bad weather, it can make it challenging. We tried to photograph the Hebb family over a the coarse of their stay and we had some unusually bad weather that week. So we took the unusual step of rescheduling during the day (rather than sunrise/sunset). Luckily we had a spectacular window, bright sun and blue skies. There was even some blooming Railroad Vine or Beach Morning Glory as it’s also known.  According to The South Florida Plant Guide They describe the Railroad Vine as follows: “To call the unique railroad vine a fast growing ground cover is almost an understatement. Like a turbo-charged express train, it makes tracks so rapidly you can almost watch it grow.”  Check out The South Florida plant Guide it’s a great resource for local plants.

Anyway back to the Hebbs, we managed to get some terrific shots, the kids did great. So much so we received this amazing compliment…..

“I just received my pictures and they look fantastic!  I wanted to say Thank you again even though the weather seemed to be against us at every turn!”

Shooting during the day does have its pluses. Magazines sometimes prefer bright sun type pictures for a lot of shots. Some editors think ‘bright=happy’. While it’s not as flattering as low light photography, we can certainly help softening harsh shadows with the use of external camera flash. The only real drawback to full sun shooting is that it can hard on your eyes. Some people really struggle with squinting during a high sun shoot. If you have sensitive eyes I would not recommend doing a beach family portrait in full sun.

Sanibel photography is certainly more challenging than you might think but with the right tools and willing subjects it is definitely worthwhile.

Thanks to the Hebb family, it was great to meet you guys, come back and see us soon:)

Family Beach Portrait, Captiva Island

The Roettger Family Beach Portrait, Captiva

I had the pleasure of taking the Roettger family beach portrait on Captiva Island. You can tell we had a great sunset:)

It’s funny but being that we are in the tropics, the weather is very changeable. In the summer months we have rain everyday, very short spells mainly but daily rain never the less. The weather forecast looks something like this: 90 degrees, sunshine from sunrise to 3 PM then showers in the pm. Now you could copy and paste that forecast for six months of the year. The challenging part for me as a photographer is that it can be raining cats and dogs at the studio and half a mile down the road it could be bright sunshine. How do I combat this? With the photogs best friend… webcams! I have a whole folder of links to webcams on my iphone that I use on a daily basis. The webcams don’t lie! Give it a try.

Back to the Roettger Family, we had a great shoot, everything turned out fantastic. They came to our viewing studio and selected their pictures and ordered a stunning fine art gallery wrap collection of five images. They have since been shipped out and delivered by our trusty partners, UPS.  I then received an amazing letter that read as follows:

“I received my pictures yesterday and I LOVE THEM!  I was very nervous spending so much money, but it certainly turned out to be the right choice.
Thanks you for your service, your talent, and your expertise .  You made our night so much fun, but most importantly, you made memories and keepsakes we will treasure forever!”
Thank you Mrs Roettger and family for trusting us to be your photographers, it’s people like you that make this job so rewarding and fulfilling. Hopefully we will see you next year for your family beach portrait.
