Even though I am a professional photographer, I still like to go out and take pictures just for fun. I recently did just that! I called my father-in-law, a retired biology teacher who loves wildlife and the wilderness and asked him if he would like to join me for a ride through the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. He readily accepted and brought along his binoculars and bird books to be my “wing” man. It was not ideal photography conditions, overcast and in the middle of the day, but it was just for fun it did not matter too much. Armed with my father-in-law as chief spotter and me with my 400mm 2.8 Canon lens we set off and this is what I photographed:
By the way: if anyone is interested in renting a Canon 400 f/2.8L IS USM telephoto lens give me a call. I also have other lenses, tele converters and bird photography equipment available for rent.

I was leaving the island a couple of weeks ago, the wind was really strong and it was pretty cold (by Sanibel standards). Although you see kiteboarding and windsurfing on a regular basis in the back bay, this one guy really caught my eye. I happened to have my camera gear and my 400mm lens with me, so I stopped and watched this guy for a bit and he was totally amazing. I later found out that he is an instructor for a local kiteboard and windsurf shop called Ace Performer. If you ever get the chance stop in, it is a really cool shop! (this is not a paid ad). They have kiteboards, kayaks, Stand up paddle boards, windsurf equipment and all the gear associated with wind board sports. They also do lessons and rent gear. The shop is like a warehouse with gear hanging from the ceiling and stacked against the walls. It definitely brings out the inner kid in you! I have always wanted to give it a try… maybe I will now.

Talk about a chance meeting,
I warn you- if you have zero interest in motorcycles, then skip to the next paragraph 🙂
Back in January of this year a friend of mine and I decided to take our motorcycle tests. We both passed our tests and then after renting a couple of bikes decided to go ahead and buy motorcycles. I found a used Ducati Monster that I bought and fell in love with. My wife, Lori on the other hand was not as pleased about my new found love. She did not feel comfortable or safe on the back of it. So after selling my new love (the Ducati) I started in earnest looking for a bike again. I was interested in buying a Triumph so I went to the guys at Gulf Coast Motorcycles ( http://www.gcmotorcycles.com/) in Fort Myers and they were absolutely fantastic. They let me try out a couple of bikes and went above and beyond in my quest to find the perfect bike. I rode just about every Triumph they had and all of the bikes that I liked were not ‘ideal’ for a pillion (second rider). In a last ditch effort, I rode a BMW K1200s and I was blown away by it. Unfortunately they did not have any used bikes that were within my price range. So after a recommendation I started using a site called ‘Site Mash’ (http://www.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/mash.cgi?cat=cpmoto) Its an excellent site that searches multiple listing sites like Craigslist, Ebay, Cycle Trader. It came up with a great looking bike, a blue K1200GT. The only problem was it was a little bit more than I could spend, so I sent the seller an email and sure enough, we agreed on a deal! I paid a little less for the bike than he was asking with the understanding that I would take pictures of the seller and his new wife.
Back on subject, back to photography-
Denis and Sheryl are a fantastic couple. Denis is in the US Marines and currently based in Miami, FL. He has already served in Afghanistan, Iraq and Africa. Denis is soon to be deployed back to Afghanistan again so he wanted some photographs of he and his wife before he goes back. They met in Africa where his wife was serving with the US Army. They arranged a trip over from Miami and booked a room at the Sanibel Harbour Resort and Spa. (www.sanibel-resort.com) We did their shoot at the Lighthouse beach on Sanibel and then they headed back the next morning. Super nice couple!
All the best guys. Stay safe Denis and it was a pleasure to meet you both. Stay in touch.
